Finding Your Balance

Writer's picture: Abi Cliett Abi Cliett

Hey guys!! So its officially been three weeks since I finished my freshman year of college and can I just say wow. A lot of fun times, drama, heartache, etc. has happened since the last time I talked to y'all. I'm not gonna sit here and lie to y'all saying that college is all cupcakes and rainbows because *crickets chirping* ummmm hello it's not!!! College is suppose to be one of the funniest experiences of an individual's life, but (and here's the kicker) you have to find a balance between school, homework, hanging with friends, greek life, clubs, a job, eating, fill in the blank with whatever else y'all do because I could literally go on and on! One simply can not go through life without determining a list of priorities and a schedule because, and I say this from experience, if you do not make time for all of the activities you intend or hope to get done then trust me they are more than likely not going to get things done. One of the ways I attempt to stay efficient with my time is to make a checklist/goals list of everything you would like to try to get done each day. Making a list helps me to prioritize what exactly I should do when throughout my day. Although the funnest part of college is not having parents there, sometimes honestly I miss them making me sit down and work at out dining room table because it always helped me to stay on track and make sure to get my homework, or whatever, done on time. Not gonna lie, it is very hard to stay on track and stay focused in college. If you have kept up with me on social media over the past year, then y'all know that I basically was always at the library because Club Hendy is where its at. Nah dudes im kidding but you will have so much homework and I tend to not be able to really focus for long amounts of time so I go to the library to get homework or studying done. Prioritizing is very important and very helpful when you are feeling overwhelmed or in need of guidance. Sometimes all we need is a checklist to help us remember everything we need to do. Finding a balance in your life is so important; honestly I still do not think I have found my perfect balance yet. And please definitely do not think that everyone's lives are exactly the same because what works for me might not work for you but I just thought I would share with y'all my experience just to put some perspective on the subject. For me, I struggle when it comes to studying and hanging with friends. I have always been good about setting aside time for homework but when it comes time to study for a test or quiz or what not, I struggle with my time and finding a happy medium so that I am not too overwhelmed with either studying or hanging with friends. When people say that too much studying is bad for the brain, THEY MEAN IT! There is a thing called too much studying where you literally exhaust yourself trying to study for hours on end. Trust me breaks are needed when you try to pull an all nighter// DO NOT pull an all nighter. It is neither healthy for you or beneficial because personally by like 2am I can not focus on anything and nothing that I do after that will retain in my brain. Plus I am so physically and mentally exhausted the next day that it makes it even harder to focus or anything going on. Again I repeat finding a balance is crucial during college because you only have about 12-18 hours a day to get things done, and between going to classes, working, studying, hanging with friends, etc there is never enough time to get everything done. You have to determine what is most important so that you get your top priorities done first before everything else. I'm going to cut off my rant here but hopefully this helps someone, and please if y'all ever need more advice or have questions feel free to text or call me anytime! Plus if y'all have tips or tricks of y'alls own please reach out and tell me about them because everything helps when it comes to trying to be the best and efficient you there can be! XOXO
